Users also responsible for hacking

Week after week, thieves break into corporate computer systems to steal customer lists, email addresses and credit card numbers. Large data breaches get overshadowed by even larger ones.

Yet people are turning over personal information to online retailers, social networks and other services in growing numbers. The point at which people lose trust in the websites they deal with appears further away than ever before, if it exists at all, as shopping, socializing and gaming online becomes deeply embedded in modern life.

10 things to know about iPad 2

Over a month after it launched iPad 2 in the US, Apple's next-generation tablet, iPad 2, officially arrives in India. Apple tends to roll out iPad and iPhone across the world gradually. The company announced that apart from India, iPad 2 will be available in 11 additional countries.

Earlier, the company received a lot of flak when it launched original iPad in India nearly nine months after its US launch. iPad 2 is a revamped version of original iPad that launched in India in January end. The new tablet features a dual-core processor called A5 and is slimmer and lighter than the earlier version. Apple's original iPad defined the tablet computer market and was swiftly followed by offerings from the tech industry's main players, from Samsung and Dell to BlackBerry maker RIM and Toshiba.

Here are 10 things to know about the new iPad.

How to make Windows 7 multifunctional

9.jpg
Windows 7
Windows 7 is not just another pretty face. Underneath all those fancy Aero effects , transitions and translucent windows lies an operating system that has a many tricks up its sleeve. These are just a few.

God mode
If there is one single tweak you can do to Windows 7, God Mode should be it. God Mode works with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and is officially a hidden feature; something you won't find in the user manual. God Mode gives you all possible settings, control panel items, all possible configuration options in one place. To enable God Mode, make a new folder anywhere on the PC and name it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8 E54-465 E-825 C-99712043 E01C}.

The folder icon will instantly change to one that looks like a control panel, and inside the folder you'll get one-click access to all the settings on your computer. The name is actually inconsequential , but a rather clever way of propagating the idea. So, if you use the code "Testing.{ED7BA470-8 E54-465 E-825 C-99712043 E01C}", it still works. These codes are part of Windows Globally Unique Identifiers of GUIDs. A full list of various GUIDs can be found at http:// goo.gl/9311U.

RSS wallpaper
If you're on an unlimited internet plan, you can enable an automatic RSS wallpaper with Windows 7. Many different themes for Windows 7 are available that take advantage of this feature. For example, download the Microsoft Bing theme from http:// goo.gl/iqwlW.

Once downloaded , double click the theme to activate and select the option to download the attachments when prompted. Then, right click on an empty area on the desktop and click 'personalize' to view the themes. Click the newly installed Bing theme and click 'Desktop Backgrounds'.

Here, you can change how often you want the desktop wallpaper to change and select between the wallpapers that have already been downloaded. Many more RSS themes for Windows 7 can be found with a simple search.

Windows 7 as Wi-Fi router
A free prog RAM called Connectify (www.connectify.me) works with Windows 7 to turn it into a Wi-Fi router, so that other nearby devices can connect and use the PC's internet connection.

This virtual Wi-Fi feature is only available in Windows 7 and it becomes possible to use the wireless adapter as a wireless hotspot. Another open-source software that does the same thing is Virtual Router Manager (http:// virtualrouter .codeplex.com).

Problem steps recorder
This Windows 7 tool can help you retrace any steps that lead to a problem you are facing. For example, if a certain sequence of events is leading to an error message, you can record your actions with the Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) and send it to a friend for diagnosis. To start the PSR, simply click the start button, type PSR and hit enter.

In the window that pops up, click the record button and perform the action needed. Once finished, give the file a name and it will get saved as a zip, including the problem details and screenshots of the actions you performed along the way.

Display colour calibration
Most laptop and desktop monitors are not properly colour calibrated, with the result that what you see onscreen may not be the same as what you print or what you see on other screens.

For a quick colour calibration of your display, click the Start button, type DCCW and hit enter. The Display Colour Calibration tool will start, to provide a guided, stepby-step process (In case you are using multiple monitors, move the DCCW window to the display you want to calibrate).
Automatic docking
These handy shortcuts can help with window docking; rather than resize windows manually (which is always an option), use the Windows key in combination with the four cursor keys to dock the active window in various locations.

Clicking Win + left will dock the active window to the left half of the screen, Win + up will maximize, Win + down will minimize and so on.

Mouse gestures
Windows 7 includes some helpful mouse gestures that work as shortcuts . If you have several programs open, to access the jump list (contextual menu) for each, you would normally right click on the program's icon in the taskbar. But if you left click and drag the cursor upwards, it performs the same action.

Or if you click and drag a window to the top of the screen, it maximizes the window. Drag it to the left or the right and the window will get docked to the left or right of the screen.

Customise the shut down button
The Windows 7 start menu is quite different from previous versions. If you need to Sleep or Hibernate the PC for example, you have to click the Start button and then click on the appropriate action in a sub menu.

To customize what the Shut Down button does, right click the Start button and click properties. Under the Start Menu tab, you can choose the default action for the Shut Down button.

Ready boost on steroids
Ready Boost is a Windows feature that uses a USB flash drive to provide an instant speed boost to your system. The feature uses the additional space on a USB drive as RAM and therefore the USB drive has to meet speed requirements to be used as a Ready Boost drive.

To check a USB flash drive for Ready Boost compatibility or to enable Ready Boost, simply plug a drive into an available port, open 'My Computer' , right click on the drive's icon and click 'Properties' . Here, you will see a tab for Ready Boost.

Note that you can either set a portion of the drive or the entire available space to be used for Ready Boost, but you will not be able to use that allocated space for anything else.

Ready Boost was also available on Windows Vista, but with Windows 7, the feature has been enhanced to include support for multiple drives and higher capacities . With Windows 7, if you have enough free USB ports and flash drives lying around, you can use them to provide a massive speed boost to your system.

Zany keyboard shortcuts
The Windows + Home key minimizes everything except the current window, Win + G displays the desktop gadgets in front of other windows, Win + + (plus key) activates the magnifier and enlarges the area of the screen you are looking at you can Shift + left click any window on the taskbar to open another instance of it. Some power users like to keep multiple instances and multiple windows running.

So for example, if you have 10 Windows explorer windows, and 10 each of Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents open, using the standard Alt+Tab method to switch between them will be time consuming. Just hold down Ctrl + click on any explorer icon in the taskbar to cycle through only the explorer windows.

Olive VR-9 Router

Olive VR-9 Router
This battery-powered device is an easy way out if you already have a high-speed USB data card. The Olive Nexus VR-9 has a USB port into which you can plug in a data card and it creates a Wi-Fi hotspot that can be accessed by five devices.

It costs Rs 3,500 and can be purchased from olivetelecom.in.

It has a complicated initial setup process?you have to connect the device with an Ethernet cable, enter the router?s IP address and feed in data card details (number, username, password).

The battery lasts for 4 hours but you have the flexibility to plug your data card directly into the laptop anyway. It might make more sense than the Tata Photon WiFi because even after adding the cost of a USB data card (Rs 1,599 for Reliance, Rs 1,799 for Tata), it is still cheaper.

All your other Wi-Fi enabled devices will then be able to connect to this hotspot and share the primary internet connection.

Apart from the practicality angle, there can be many uses for this. Your laptop can have high-speed internet connectivity on the move. Within your own network, you devices will be able to share data with each other.

And you’ll save quite a bit of cash at the end of the month if you share just one unlimited data plan with five other devices.

Tata Photon Wifi

Tata Photon Wifi
Apart from the regular Tata Photon+ USB device, you can also go for the Tata Photon Wifi. It is a pocket-sized, battery-powered router that connects to the Photon network and provides high speed Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 5 nearby devices. It costs Rs 6,599 (plus the usual monthly plan).

Using a Windows 7 laptop

Using a Windows 7 laptop
If you have a Wi-Fi enabled Windows 7 laptop (32-bit or 64-bit), a free program called Connectify (connectify.me) can create a personal hotspot, allowing other nearby laptops, phones, portable gaming consoles and tablets to use your internet connection.

Like with any Wi-Fi router, you can configure it with a name, add access passwords and hide the network (disable broadcasting). Once the software is installed, the Connectify hotspot can be started and stopped at any time from the Windows 7 notification area on the right side of the taskbar.

Connectify works with most Wi-Fi cards in laptops, though the functionality may be limited in some cases. For example, if your laptop connects to the internet using Wi-Fi itself, it may not be able to use Connectify to further share the network.

If your laptop connects to the internet using an Ethernet cable or using a USB data card, Connectify will work without an issue. However, if your laptop has a Windows 7 certified Wi-Fi card, it will support Access Point connections.

This means that even if the laptop connects to the internet using Wi-Fi, it will still be able to share the internet connection with other devices. If your laptop has a Windows 7 certified Wi-Fi card that supports Access Point connections, Connectify can also be used as a repeater or range extender for your home Wi-Fi network.

All you have to do is place your laptop towards the periphery of your existing Wi-Fi network and enable Connectify.

Unfortunately, Connectify depends on improvements made to Windows 7 to operate, hence it is not compatible with Windows XP or Vista (although it is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2). Connectify will also soon be available for Android devices (available on the Android App Market).

Windows Mobile 6.5

Windows Mobile 6.5
Devices like the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC HD2 powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 can also use JoikuSpot the same application that Symbian smartphones use. It is available for purchase and immediate download from joikushop.com.

Another option is WmWiFirouter (wmwifirouter.com). While a 21-day free trial of the app is available, you will have to buy the full version for Rs 940 to continue using it after that. Wi-Fi tethering is not yet available for the latest Windows Phone 7 devices yet.

Using an Android device

Using an Android device
Android has the most options when it comes to sharing an internet connection via Wi-Fi. For starters, any phone or tablet with Android version 2.2 or later has the personal Wi-Fi hotspot feature built in by default (without any restrictions).

To activate it, go to Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile AP. Once you activate Mobile AP, you can configure it with a name, add an access password and even hide the network so that only trusted devices can connect to it.

There are many options for older Android devices too. PdaNet is an option for USB and Bluetooth tethering (It was earlier also available for Palm and Windows Mobile phones). You can download the app directly from the Android App Market, connect the device to your computer and access the data connection.

Another open source project is Android Wi-Fi Tether (available from code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether). The app is available even for older devices with Android version 1.1 and 1.5 (cupcake). However, to use the Android Wi-Fi Tether app with Android version 2.1, you need to have a rooted device.

Rooting an Android phone is a process similar to jailbreaking on Apple iOS devices. It allows more access to the device?s hidden settings. Rooting is not illegal but will definitely void the warranty on the phone.

The iPhone 4

The iPhone 4
Wi-Fi tethering on the iPhone was previously only available for jailbroken devices. The MyWi application (available for $19.99 from the Cydia installer on jailbroken devices) can connect to a cellular network on the iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 and iPad to create a personal Wi-Fi hotspot.

The app also enables USB and Bluetooth tethering on the same devices. More information on MyWi can be found on the developers website, intelliborn.com.

No such app is available for non-jailbroken devices. However, with the latest iOS 4.3 software update (available to download from March 10, 2011 onwards), the iPhone 4 also gets the personal Wi-Fi hotspot option officially. Using the new feature, three devices can connect to the iPhone 4 using Wi-Fi, and another two using USB and Bluetooth.

At this point, it’s not clear as to why Apple is not offering the feature on older devices like the iPhone 3G/3GS or for that matter on the 3G version of the iPad.

Using a Symbian Phone

Using a Symbian Phone
Symbian Series 60 phones with Wi-Fi were actually the first to get the ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot, using a free app called JoikuSpot Light. JoikuSpot also supports certain Samsung Symbian Series 60 phones like the Omnia HD i8910 and the Maemo-powered Nokia N900.

Well, JoikuSpot is still around (joiku.com) and has been upgraded to include support for Symbian Series 60 5th Edition (touch phones like the Nokia 5800 and 5530 Xpress Music) and the latest Symbian^3 (for phones like the Nokia C6, C7, N8 and E7).

With the Light version of JoikuSpot, you cannot name your network and the Wi-Fi hotspot that you create is unsecured, meaning that anyone with a Wi-Fi enabled device will be able to connect to it.

The Light version is also limited in the sense that it only supports basic internet protocols (not all websites will be accessible using a hotspot created by JoikuSpot Light).

Apart from that, there are no restrictions on the Light version, no time limitations and no obligation to upgrade to the paid version.

To download the Light version directly to your phone, visit joikuspot.com/light from your phone?s web browser. If you prefer to secure your Wi-Fi hotspot so that only you can access it, you can get the paid version for $12.50 from joikushop.com.

How to create your own Wi-Fi hotspot

How to create your own Wi-Fi hotspot

Almost all the portable gadgets we use today need to be connected to the internet. Instead of getting an individual internet connection for each of them, you can use one of them to create a personal, mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

All your other Wi-Fi enabled devices will then be able to connect to this hotspot and share the primary internet connection.

Apart from the practicality angle, there can be many uses for this. Your laptop can have high-speed internet connectivity on the move. Within your own network, you devices will be able to share data with each other.

And you?ll save quite a bit of cash at the end of the month if you share just one unlimited data plan with five other devices.

Nintendo 3DS-

Real 3D Graphics.
No Glasses Needed.

Introducing the Nintendo 3DS system. Experience incredible gameplay featuring real 3D graphics, with no need for special glasses. Nintendo 3DS is a breakthrough in portable entertainment, a truly cutting-edge piece of hardware. It has to be seen to be believed.

3D Screen

The Nintendo 3DS system opens up a whole new world of eye-popping gameplay possibilities. The stereoscopic 3D display of the upper screen gives objects within the game world a feeling of space and depth that extends far into the back of the screen. It becomes easier to see the position of characters and obstacles in the world, making many game experiences even more intuitive for all types of players.

3D Depth Slider

A built-in 3D Depth Slider allows you to immediately adjust the intensity of the 3D settings on the Nintendo 3DS system to your liking. The 3D effect can also be turned down completely—all Nintendo 3DS games and applications can be played in 2D, and look better than any Nintendo handheld before it.

More Hardware Features

Motion Sensor & Gyro Sensor

Portable play control reaches a new level with these amazing features, allowing for new & unique gameplay mechanics. A built-in motion sensor and gyro sensor can react to the motion and tilt of the system, so whether players are twisting their systems side to side or moving them up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS games respond instantly.

Two Screens

Game graphics have never looked better on a Nintendo handheld system, thanks to the two screens of the Nintendo 3DS system.
A widescreen display on the top screen shows 800x240 pixel resolution, allocating 400 pixels for each eye to create the 3D effect.
The bottom LCD touch screen operates at a resolution of 320x240—with both screens capable of displaying a brilliant 16.77 million colors.

Analog Control

With the Circle Pad, located above the + Control Pad, Nintendo 3DS offers full analog control in 3D game worlds. Combined with the touch screen, traditional buttons, camera and microphone input, and advanced motion control of the Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor, the potential is extraordinary.

3D Camera

The Nintendo 3DS system uses its two outer cameras to see the world in 3D, much like the human eye, allowing for the creation of 3D photos—and a similar 3D effect to that seen in Nintendo 3DS games.

Adjustable Stylus

The adjustable Nintendo 3DS Stylus takes the idea of touch control to a new and even more user-friendly level. Once removed from the holder, the stylus length can be adjusted to your liking with a simple push or pull. Now anyone can achieve the optimum level of comfort while playing games that use the stylus.

Charging Cradle

Dock your Nintendo 3DS system whenever you are not using it in the included Charging Cradle to keep it powered. You can then leave the system on in Sleep Mode while charging, so that it can communicate via the SpotPass feature at any time of day or night.

2GB SD Memory Card Included

Every Nintendo 3DS system comes packed with a 2GB SD Memory Card. You can use this SD Memory Card to store your 3D photos, and sound recordings created on the Nintendo 3DS system, and music* from your PC. You can also use it to store games downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. The Nintendo 3DS system has SDHC card compatibility to increase your storage space even further.
* Nintendo 3DS is compatible with MP3 and AAC file formats.

Backwards Compatibility

Almost all existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games can be played on a Nintendo 3DS system in 2D. With backwards compatibility, your existing portable games look and play just as well*.

* Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games will be displayed in 2D graphics. Select Nintendo DS games that use accessories in the Game Boy™ Advance slot of the Nintendo DS system are not compatible with the Nintendo 3DS system.

StreetPass™

Social and wired like no Nintendo system before it, Nintendo 3DS brings fellow players together in exciting new ways with StreetPass™ communication. Set your Nintendo 3DS to Sleep Mode and carry it with you wherever you go to exchange game data like Mii™ characters, high scores, and custom characters with other users you pass on the street. You control what data you exchange, and you can exchange data for multiple games at once, making virtual connections with real world people you encounter in your daily life.

SpotPass™

Nintendo 3DS includes SpotPass™,a feature that lets Nintendo 3DS detect wireless hotspots or wireless LAN access points and obtain information, game data, free software, videos and so on for players even when the system is in sleep mode.
